Description
Vermilion Cliffs National Monument consists of 293,000 acres of starkly remote and harshly stunning country in the far northeast corner Arizona in a region known as the Arizona Strip. It is bordered by the Kaibab National Forest on the west, the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area on the east, Utah on the north, and U.S. Highway 89A on the south. It includes some of the most fascinating geological features in the world, including the Paria Plateau and Paria Canyon, Coyote Buttes, and the long line of majestic cliffs that rise red, orange, and pink from the House Rock Valley floor, nearly 3,000 feet into the purple heavens. Also found here are the stories of such legendary figures as Dominguez and Escalante, John Wesley Powell, Jacob Hamblin, John D. Lee and his wives Emma and Rachel, Sharlot Hall, and the Kaibab Paiute people who have lived there for centuries.--outer container.
